Improved my marathon PR by 21 minutes!
I am 58 years old and started running the Newport, Oregon marathon every year about 4 years ago. My first year I had a time of about 4:46 and, with a lot of effort, have chipped away at that a little bit every year. Last year I trained hard and turned in a 4:36 time but suffered for months afterward from overtraining syndrome. So much so that I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to start training for this year’s event. However, in December, I began to be able to start training again. I knew I needed to do something different this year and stumbled across ChiRunning. I ordered the book, DVD, CD, and metronome package in March (2009) and started to apply the principles.
I also ordered a pair of Newton shoes for the proprioceptive feedback that they provide. Some of the concepts were difficult to feel because they seem counterintuitive from the “normal” heel first landing and straight up running posture. However, I gradually felt my running begin to smooth out and found myself running faster and more relaxed and my recovery from training runs became faster and more complete. I ran at Newport again a few days ago on May 30th, 2009, and slashed 21 minutes off my PR. Now, just 3 days later, I am almost fully recovered. I feel as if Saturday’s marathon was like another long hard training run. My goal for next year is to qualify for Boston.
With the Chi running techniques and my “magic” shoes, I really believe it will happen.
