Enjoying Running (and Walking too!) More than Ever Before
Dear Katherine and Danny,
I am 59 years old and 230#, and I have spent the last 30 years trying to run–even small amounts. But I inevitably (usually quickly) re-injured my calf muscles (you probably already know what’s coming). Then I would have to lay off for quite awhile. Then I’d go back and do the same thing. I tried M.D.s, D.C.s, exercises, stretching, everything I could think of. I gave up and learned racquetball. It was great and I learned to love it, but eventually gave it up because my new health club didn’t have courts.
My girlfriend and I both independently came across your book, and a chiropractor mentioned about the same time that I should lean forward more. Many years before, I had developed what I thought was an ingenious method to save my knees from the “shock” by coming down on my heels. Needless to say, what you call “putting on the brakes” didn’t really save my knees, and that was part of what was hurting my calves (actually it may have been my Achilles tendon–but whatever). I read your book, and it sounded good, but I was afraid to try it for fear of another injury. So I started out at one lap (1/13 of a mile on our indoor track). Also about that time I bought a pair of what your Chinese lady friend would call really ugly shoes–MBTs. They felt good, so did the running, and I was off on a wonderful experience: running without pain (or speed either, I might add). That was about a year ago, and I am still running without calf or Achilles pain! I wish I could say the weight just dropped right off, but I can’t. Be that as it may, I am enjoying running (and walking too!) more than ever before in my life. I have always disliked walking for exercise until I started incorporating some of the ChiRunning principles into my walking. Now I love to walk, and can go on and on! Your book has been a Godsend.
