Excited for future with Chi Running

July 12th, 2010

This is the first of what I believe will be multiple emails. I'm not even through chapter 4 of Chi Running yet but the concepts are making sense to me. I am a large 39 year old man, 6'3" and 223 lbs. Last season I recorded a sub 22 minute 5K and this year my goal is a sub 20 minute 5K. I did my 5K run this morning and really tried to focus on monitoring all my mechanics and posture. I already lean when I run but I found that this morning, I tried to implement a deep breathing pattern - 2 in, 3 out, lean forward even more, but originate my leg movements from my pelvis. I know that I don't know what I'm doing yet but just from doing that, I felt that none of the power for my run was coming from my achilles / calves. There were points when I didn't feel that my legs were even doing anything! I am excited about what the future holds...I think this will really help me become more fluid when I run which will add to the enjoyment I already get from running and perhaps my time goal will come along as an added benefit.

A Chi Running Love Letter

A message of pure gratitude as your book on Chi Running has completely changed my running experience. In only three and a half years I've gone through patellar tendonitis (in both knees), plantar fasciitis, and many other injuries I can't even describe.
