View More Articles Steady Growth for SpringWritten by Matthew Germain Who doesn’t love the sound of running water and birds chirping? We bundle ourselves up and slumber through the winter waiting in anticipation for that beautiful morning where the sun seems a little brighter and birds create a symphony just outside our window. An overwhelming urge to run, walk or clean our closets overtakes us. It is time to clean out, try new things and get moving again!
Our ChiRunning® and ChiWalking® practices teach us the value of Gradual Progress. During this season of growth it is important to approach our diets with Gradual Progress, too. Rapid weight loss and detoxification miracles are heavily advertised this time of year, appealing to the innate intelligence of our bodies that tells us it is time to clean up and get moving again. Restriction of food through detox and/or fasting may be an appropriate remedy in certain instances, but only with the help of a qualified professional. Just as we don’t dive headlong into the middle of substantial marathon training, we must balance the process of cleaning our bodies. Below are some healthy and effective ways to utilize seasonal vegetables to help clean your system gradually. These will leave you feeling enlivened and ready to grow with the spring. Dandelion Tea- Less than 100 years ago, this drink was a staple in the American South during the spring months. Pharmacological studies show that Dandelion Root tea can stimulate bile flow from the liver, helping to carry away waste and break down fats in our food. Dandelion tea is available at health food stores and many standard grocery stores. Greens – Possibly the most ignored food in the standard American diet, greens like spinach, kale and Swiss chard contain thousands of nutrients and phytonutrients that help create acid and alkalinity balance in our bodies. Try to steam and then sauté with garlic and olive oil – you will be craving them all spring long! Berries – Every time we flip through a magazine about healthy eating, many articles explain the value of antioxidants. What more delicious way to get these valuable micronutrients in your diet than berries? Antioxidants help break up waste products, known as free radicals, that occur when our body performs a variety of different chemical reactions. Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries all help break up and neutralize free radicals. Throw some in a nice whole grain cereal tomorrow morning and enjoy. Water – Drink room temperature or warm water. This helps push lymph through your lymphatic system. Feelings of sluggishness or bloating are often associated with clogged lymphatic systems. A steady flow of lymph is also important for optimal joint flexibility, a key component to your ChiRunning® and ChiWalking® practice. If you are a tea or coffee drinker, consider replacing one daily serving with a mug of hot water. Most importantly, remember to take the time to participate in nourishing activities. Time spent with loved ones and enjoying nature help create a sense well-being and renewal during these wonderful spring months.
