Gray Caws Certified Instructor
I discovered running in 2004 and was immediately fascinated by how the body works and how it can adapt and improve given certain stimuli. I was keen to improve my technique so after a great deal of research and trial and error I discovered the Chi Running method.
In May 2010 I attended an inspirational workshop with Danny Dreyer. This encouraged me to train to become one of only a handful of Certified Chi Running Instructors in the UK. As part of my certification process I assisted Master Instructors Marion Meesters in Amsterdam (May 2012) and Catherina McKiernan in Dublin (June 2012).
I’m passionate about running and believe Chi Running can help people to rediscover the joy and excitement of running as well as improve efficiency and reduce the risk of injury. I love teaching and find it satisfying when I can help someone improve their skill and fitness, achieve their goals and improve their lives.
I run regular one-day Chi Running Workshops in London. Each workshop includes, video analysis, a free one-hour group follow-up session and access to London Chi Running Club where time is spent on particular focuses before heading out for a run around some of London’s open spaces to put them into practice. I also offer 1-2-1 and small group sessions by appointment.
I am a fully-qualified personal trainer, kettlebell and ViPR instructor and can offer bespoke training programmes to complement your Chi Running training if required.
I run and train in minimalist shoes and barefoot as I believe this promotes better posture, proprioception and balance, helping develop a stronger core and natural movement. Whilst this is not a prerequisite for my clients I believe the Chi Running technique lends itself perfectly to running in less supportive, cushioned shoes.
I have run several half marathons, numerous 10ks and the 2010 Virgin London Marathon.

Great if you’re completely new to Chi Running or what to refresh your skills if you’ve attended a 1-day workshop, or the London Chi Running Club. It is suitable for all levels of runner from complete beginner to ultra-marathoner as there is very little running involved – the focus is on technique. It is also suitable for those running “barefoot” or wanting to transition to a more minimalist shoe. We’ll work on drills and exercises to improve your technique.
Chi Running teaches natural, energy-efficient running technique which greatly reduces your risk of injury. Injuries are often caused by the body being misaligned, putting unnecessary pressure on muscles and joints. Chi Running focuses on correct alignment and relaxation to create effortless, pain-free running.
Adopting the central movement principles of T’ai Chi, Chi Running logically shifts the workload towards your core muscles, allowing your leg muscles to work less. This helps create a natural mid-foot landing, greatly reducing impact on the body.
The workshop includes individual full-body video analysis and will cover the basic components of Chi Running:
Correct posture and alignment of the body
Engaging gravity to create forward momentum and mid-foot landing, greatly reducing impact on the body
Lifting and relaxing ankles rather than pushing from your toes
Correct arm swing and upper body focuses
Optimal cadence (strides per minute)
How to relax and enjoy your running

“Thank you so much for the introductory session last night – I loved how much easier running felt after only 1 hour with you!” Emma Ross, free Introduction to Chi Running session 07 November 2012.
Places: Limited
Want to find out more about Chi Running? I’ll explain the importance of posture, gravity, foot strike, arm swing and cadence and how you can develop your running technique to improve energy efficiency and reduce the risk of injury.
The two main themes underlaying all Chi Running materials are energy efficiency and injury prevention. Chi Running combines the central movement principles of T’ai Chi with running, reducing impact on the body. With good postural alignment and relaxation, core stability, engaging gravity to create forward momentum, mid foot landing, and optimal cadence, you’ll learn to run focused, relaxed and in balance.
This 45 minute introduction will give a basic summary of the main aspects of the technique along with short demos and exercises for you to practice. There will also be time for questions.
Places are limited.
