About Tommy
Tommy has been a regular runner for the past 16 years. He started with a course at a local park near his parents’ home. He never ran for distance or time, but for the rejuvenating, joyful feelings the simple act of running at dusk produced. Over the years he continued to run, including a variety of 10k and 10-mile races, and eventually, in 2000, he ran two marathons and placed 3rd in his age division in the Lake Tahoe Marathon. At the same time, however, he began to notice a lot more aches and pains which he attributed to the all the miles he put in training for these marathons. He decided to reduce the frequency and distances he ran.
Then it happened. In August of 2003, Tommy was hobbled by an inexplicable calf injury. He sought medical treatment from western and eastern medical practitioners, but nothing seemed to work. By June of 2004, he was frustrated and depressed by his inability to run like he once had: injury-free and without the worry of what the next step would bring. While perusing a bookstore he came across Danny’s book. Within a few minutes of thumbing through it, Tommy could see that he shared a very similar philosophy about running, and intuitively, could sense the soundness of the ChiRunning technique. Less than two weeks after discovering Danny’s book, and without taking a single class beforehand, Tommy was training to be a certified instructor.
Since the first time he ran using the ChiRunning technique to today, more than eight months later, Tommy’s experience has borne out his intuition last June. Indeed, in many ways, ChiRunning has completely flipped a number of views he held previously. He has run injury and pain free since last June, and that calf injury has become a blessing. He found that injury and pain are not inevitable for someone who runs regularly, nor is logging hundreds of training miles necessary for running a marathon.
For those who view running as more than simply a physical act, the technique and philosophy behind ChiRunning is ripe with lessons and metaphors for the rest of your life. But, whether you want to access these additional aspects of ChiRunning or simply want to learn a more efficient and less injury prone way to run, Tommy is here to teach you.
At the present time, Tommy does not have any pre-scheduled classes. He will be updating this webpage regularly, so please check back. In the meanwhile, he is available to teach group or individual lessons, and would be glad to answer any questions you may have. He resides in San Francisco and can be reached at (415) 602-3121.
