pain in top of feet

Postby mikeinuk » Sun Mar 07, 2010 7:15 pm

I started using the chi running technique about three weeks ago after not having run for about a year due to knee pain. so far knees fine but i'm getting some soreness in the tops of my feet, especially the right. Is this usual at first, or am i doing something wrong?

First thing to check is shoelace tightness. It is really easy to cause a bruise on top of your instep with your laces and the soreness from that can last a long, long time. Loosen up your laces a little bit, especially directly over the are that hurts.

Could be something else, but based on limited information available, I'd start with the laces.

Thanks jacquie, Ithought that I was being careful not to over overtighten my laces.I shall have see if keeping them extra loose helps. but first I intend to take a week off to let my feet settle down. I will let you know how things go.

I keep my shoes as loosely tied as possible. I don't even untie them to put them on or off. I know they say not to do that, but my shoes are loose enough for that.

I'm not running on trails or grass at all...strictly paved roads and sidewalks.

I wear the Asics GEL Cumulus 9s and 10s. I don't have the 11s yet. I actually just bought another pair of 9s.

Anyway, just adding in my experience...

I had this problem for years until I discovered a website on lacing shoes to help prevent pain. I simply don't cross the laces over the top of my foot where the pain is, but lace up the sides and once more at the top. This has helped tremendously. My doctor says I have osteoarthritis at my metatarsal joints, so it isn't really reversible, but I run pain free now!

Hi Laurauch, do you have a link to that website or at least recall the name of it. I can't really visualise what you mean by not crossing the laces over the top of your foot.

Thanks, mike

Mike,
It would be interesting to know if you find a lacing method that fixes the problem.

Hi folks, just to update you on how i've been getting on. After resting for some 10 days to let my feet settle down I went for a gentle run this morning. I've bought a new pair of shoes, (Nike zoom air) a half size larger than I have been wearing, they're dead comfy and appear to weigh nothing at all. Made my old shoes feel like clogs. I laced them as per the website recomended by richi ( across and up the side then back across t'other side). Result, feet absolutely fine. So thanks to all of you for your help in getting me back on the road.

I use the last technique that addresses heel slippage. However, I never knew that was to help with heel slippage and I've never had that problem either. My friend showed me that when I was in high school (15 years ago).

I have had my laces too tight though. So, I started going with looser and looser and now very loose lases. It works great for me. I just got lucky that I was already using this technique to tie my laces. I can make the laces as loose as I want, and my heel never slips at all.
