Running Shoe Recommendations

Postby JeffreyL13 » Tue Apr 21, 2009 4:15 pm

I recently was recommended two shoes for midfoot cushioning: Ascics Gel Kayano 15 and Brooks Trance 8. Does anyone have experience with these shoes? I am approximately 170 pounds and run between 25-30 miles per week. I slightly pronate so need a mild stability shoe.

I am familiar with the Asics so I will comment on that one. The Kayano is more than mildly stable. It is near the top of their motion control line. Will the store allow you to run in both shoes on a treadmill or on the sidewalk in front of the store? They should and that would help you decide.

First - thank you for your reply! I ran in both on the treadmill and both were comfortable. The store also films your gait and both corrected my mild pronation. The ascics seemed to be a more solid shoe (heavier) and seemed to be higher off the ground which made them feel more cushioned but when I attended Dan Dreyer's lecture in NYC last year, he suggested looking for shoes that don't elevate the heel too much which is why I thought maybe the brooks would be better for the ChiRunning style. Sounds like both are probably good shoes so whichever is more comfortable is the one to go with.

Thanks again for your help!

Definitely comfort should be your primary guide. Good luck!

Jacquie

How does the Kayano compare with the Gel-3010 in terms of Motion control?

Thanks.

I believe the Kayano is a bit more sturdy than the 3010.

I personally use the Brooks Adrenaline which is a basic stability shoe. Very good for my purposes. Not too heavy and yet provides mild support. The Asics which is the comparable model is the 2140. Very fine shoe and, I've heard, is the number one running shoe seller in the U.S. As I said it is comparable to the Brooks Adrenaline, but the Asics 2140 is a bit wider and I have a narrower foot. You should try both. Good luck!

Got it - thanks. I've ordered the New Balance MR800, I am going to try it before I head the 2140 way. Appreciate your help.

I read elsewhere in this forum that the 801 is much more 'heel shoe' than the 800 is. I want to try the 800 first.

Thanks.

After going through a good two dozen shoes, I find that I really like the Adidas Adizero line. Moderate to minimal cushioning, low heel, minimal motion control. Very light. Excellent for ChiRunning. I currently use the Adizero Boston (NOT the Adidas Boston Classic) and the Adizero RC. The RCs weigh just 7 ozs; Bostons are 9.7 oz.

The RCs are so light, I'm not sure they'd have enough cushion for an entire marathon (my feet were a bit sore after 14 in them yesterday). I may use the RCs for an upcoming half, and use the Bostons for a February marathon.

A word of caution: The RCs have a funky design, with an elastic strap inside the shoe, and some "bumps" in the sole that take some getting used to. But I found they help, rather than detract, from my running and running form.

I finally have some good news.

Zappos was great. I got them to measure the width of my current Asics and find out the nearest shoe in the MR800 line that had the same width. They found one which was 1/2 size bigger than the asics, got it - seems to work very well. Now just got to run the MR800.

Recently bought an 801 and ran a 26km LSD. The shoes may look like it has a higher heel from the outside but IMHO, its more of an overmoulding of the foam on the outside. It feels relatively flat.

Experienced some soreness beside the ball of my right feet which may cause blisters for even longer runs.

Overall, I quite like it. Just need to put in more mileage in it to know better.
