Run and Walk Your Talk

Yes, Chi Running and Chi Walking help you run and walk more efficiently, but practicing the Chi-skills and principles of these techniques can also help you get more directed and focused in your every day life.

I spoke with someone today who proudly announced that they don’t do New Year’s Resolutions. “I know myself too well,” he said. “Making a New Year’s Resolution is just a joke for me. I never follow through on it”.

That attitude seems more prevalent than not. What’s the point of making a resolution that you’ll never keep?

First of all, giving up is not the solution. The depth of winter and the start of the New Year really is a great time to set some intentions for the year. Like the winter garden, the seeds planted at this time of year have the potential to come to great fruition if cared for well. The skills and principles that you apply to learning Chi Running and Chi Walking are the same for keeping your resolutions.

So, if your New Year’s Resolution is to get back into shape or to create some healthier lifestyle habits, I suggest you put on your athletic shoes and practice your Chi Walking or Chi Running … and really focus on engaging your core. And, add to your list of focuses for at least one or two exercise sessions a week, your intentions for the year. Focus on engaging your core and your intention … engaging your core and your intention, over and over for as long as you can keep the focus. You’ll loose the focus, everyone does. And, when you do, you can practice other focuses for a while, or let your mind wander for a minute or two, then re-focus once again.

With every twist of the spine, and rotation of the pelvis, that are so crucial to healthy walking and running habits, you’ll also be instating your resolutions into the deepest, most powerful part of yourself. The key is to do it fairly regularly, especially when the going gets tough. When you’re craving something rich and fattening, or when you’ve lost your temper again …get those shoes on, get moving and engage your will power by engaging your core. In your body it's called core strength. In your being, it's called will power and it is the best tool for change there is.

You see, most of us think about our resolutions, but we don’t get that intention deeply enough planted in ourselves. Your core is not only home to your greatest physical power and strength, but also home to your will power and a great deal of creative energy. There is more than one reason that developing core strength is so important and popular. When you’re core isn’t strong you can get pulled off center in lots of ways. Physically you can fall or get injured more easily when your core isn’t strong, and, mentally and emotionally you can be pulled off from the core of who you are and who you want to become. Here's one of my favorite quotes; "If you don't stand for something…you'll fall for anything."

The rest of the Chi-Principles and focuses apply to keeping your intentions as well. In Chi Walking and Chi Running you want to keep all your body parts moving in the same direction…straight forward and not side to side or up and down. Same thing with your resolutions for the year…you don’t want to waver or get too far off track. Keep your destination (your resolution) firmly in mind and follow the most direct path to get there. For this reason it is important to go back and re-read your intentions regularly. Consistency is the key here.

Chi Running and Chi Walking both begin by getting your posture aligned. When you’re practicing getting aligned, focus on your straight column while also thinking of your resolution to make more time for the kids, or to speak up at work. You’ll be getting deeply aligned with that intention.

You’ll find that when you combine your intentions with physical alignment and physical “core” work, you’ll be driving your intention into your body as well as your brain, and the combination is powerful.

All of the Chi Running and Chi Walking focuses, skills and principles will help you keep your New Year’s Resolutions, and you’ll get in great physical shape just as a bonus.
