Improve Your Running 10 Ways with One Simple Focus

I admit it. I'm an efficiency nut. I'm always trying to come up with simple acts I can do that will create the biggest results. Here's one that came to me last week while teaching a group of ChiRunning Instructor candidates. It's so simple it's crazy. But, the number of things it accomplishes is remarkable.

"Lift at the crown of your head"
There is probably no ChiRunning focus I mention more than this. And, it's one of the first focuses every ChiRunner learns.

None of us really want to feel pain when we walk or run. There are times when you might enjoy a satisfying burn during a workout, and perhaps a bit of an ache the next day. I've been thinking a lot about performance lately and I've come to believe that, as a culture, we've drifted away from its original meaning. I hear the media mostly associating the word associated with the image of elite runners, high-level athletes, and people being noticed for exceptional effort. The word faster is always in there as well. Performance has morphed into a word that implies some amount of comparison. It's no wonder we all end up with varying degrees of "performance anxiety." What I'd like to offer is a more friendly definition so that performance doesn't bring up thoughts, feelings or fears of comparison.
