Nothing is so wonderful as those “aha” moments when understanding dawns upon you and suddenly bewilderment and confusion disappear into a moment of clarity and insight.

There is a sense of relief at the resolution of whatever problem you were contemplating; an almost startled awakening to an understanding that is new and complete unto itself. It is a body-mind experience that can overtake all of your awareness in that moment. It is the Einstein moment of  “getting it”.

You can create the conditions for this kind of understanding. Just follow the yellow brick road that starts with awareness and acceptance.

ChiLiving Blog: The Conscious Process of Positive Change, Part 1

Life does not stand still. No matter how we try to stop it, change occurs and time carries life forward like the steady flow of a river.

So even without our conscious effort, change happens.

But there are many times when we want that change to take a certain direction; we’d like a particular outcome. Running is a great example. Without conscious effort, running can often degrade into injury. The 65% injury rate is a testament to that.

And, with conscious attention, it doesn’t have to be that way. You most certainly can learn to run or walk or eat or talk or listen in a way that does not degrade your quality of life, but in a way that increases the potential for enjoyment, for feeling healthy, for expressing yourself in a positive way, for feeling deeply nourished physically and in your relationships.

These days, our minds are constantly running in the background. Where did I put my keys? Did anyone like my post yet? Am I going to be late on that project? We’re juggling so many thoughts and distractions that it’s safe to say that our brains get the best workout of any part in our body.

But all that static starts to take a toll: stress and anxiety can hasten the onset of aging-related memory issues, and in the short-term, contributes to unhealthy behaviors like overeating and disrupted sleep.

So we’re pretty tense as a nation, on the whole. And for many of us, exercise is our go-to stress management strategy. Many Americans use their fitness routine as their chief stress reduction technique. Cultivate and Direct your Chi in the New Year

No matter your New Year’s Resolution, or lack thereof, there is one thing that everyone needs more of: focused, clear, directed life force – Chi.

Take a moment and feel the rise and fall of chest and belly as you breathe. Do it for 3-5 breaths. Now, feel the slight buzz of alive energy in your arms and legs. Notice whatever your skin is touching: your clothes, the chair you’re sitting on, your feet on the ground. None of those sensations would be available to you without Chi, the life-giving energy that is in every cell of your body.

Every moment that you turn your awareness to this foundational energy that imbues your body with life, you are cultivating and enhancing that life force. Chi follows your mind’s attention, moves with it, and grows from its attention like a plant that soaks up the sun’s rays.

The Art of Eating Well

Recently Danny and I went to Trader Joe’s and were literally bombarded with the most beautiful and tempting displays of sweets and chocolate and candy of every kind. I felt my craving for sugar take over my whole mind and body, shouting at me, “This is what you need to celebrate the holidays…lots of SUGAR!!!”
I was made almost senseless by the battle between the desire to buy all kinds of sweets and the knowing that I don’t feel great when I eat more than just a little bit of sugar.
It is said that sugar is as addictive as crack cocaine. I believe it.
The question is, how to celebrate and not overdo. Isn’t part of celebrating indulging oneself just a bit?
What I’d like to suggest is that we can get inspired by Dickens and Tchaikovsky and we can make art of eating well. What great art does is take almost anything and make it sublime, the ultimate, the quintessential, so that you fully appreciate and enjoy even the simple and humble. Look at Van Gogh’s Chair, a simple, common item brought to the heights of human sensibility
